BVRLA Polimapper Case Study

“Polimapper were wonderful to work with and took all the stress out of the process“

Thomas Mclennan, head of policy and public affairs at the BVRLA, explains why they chose Polimapper for their Fleet Friendly Index

The brief

The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association’s members are leading the way in bringing about cleaner, greener, transport solutions. But these green solutions require the support of local authorities and national governments in helping to build the necessary infrastructure.

Data on the extent of this support, however, is limited.

This is where we came in.

Research phase

On behalf of the BVRLA we conducted a Freedom of Information request on the subject of electric vehicle charging for fleets. The request, sent to local authorities across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, uncovered the levels to which local authorities are considering the needs of electric vehicle fleets when it comes to charging infrastructure.

Polimapper has shown the value of having interactive, compelling, policy orientated outputs at our events, we want to do more like that”

Visualisation

Using the freedom of information data, the results were categorised and displayed in three maps using Polimapper’s Stakeholder 1-2-1 tool.

  • Presence of an EV strategy
  • Evidence of fleet engagement
  • Existence of fleet resources.

Our research found that only 37% of local authorities have an EV strategy, and that only 3% have clearly engaged with, or considered the needs of, the fleet sector.

The maps were launched in conjunction with the Fleet Charging Guide at the BVRLA’s parliamentary reception in March, with the aim of enabling greater collaboration between all stakeholders to ensure a charging infrastructure that works for everyone.

The reception, hosted by Ian Levy MP, was packed with BVRLA members and featured speeches by both Levy and DfT minister Jesse Norman.

Polimapper visualisations were featured on two large screens, and were used by a member of the BVRLA team to talk MPs through the results for their constituency.

Client verdict

Thomas Mclennan, head of policy and public affairs at the BVRLA, explains why they chose Polimapper for this project.

“We decided to conduct a Freedom of Information request on the preparedness of local authorities for charging fleets of electric cars because it was the only way to get a truly representative national view on the issue, there is no other data.

Polimapper undertook the FOI process for us, making it very easy. They were wonderful to work with and took all the stress out of the process

I chose Polimapper to visualise the data because I saw a number of their previous clients’ work and it was fantastically impactful, I knew it was right for our project.

We used Polimapper at our parliamentary reception in March. It was massively engaging. MPs loved looking at the data and talking to us about it, I think it was a brilliant tool to spark conversations.

Polimapper has shown the value of having interactive, compelling, policy orientated outputs at our events, we want to do more like that.”
