The new Open Data Service for Wales is here.
The Welsh Government has launched a new version of its open data service StatsWales. The platform has for long been a significant source of public data in Wales, and the updated site promises a more modern, flexible and user-friendly experience.
The new service features:
- An open API, for direct connection to datasets for use in dashboards, analysis tools and custom applications.
- All new and updated datasets.
- Dataset download in a range of formats.
- Browsing data by categories functionality alongside filtering and sorting datasets.
Launched last week, the new version of StatsWales has been made available as a ‘beta service’, as the government promises to ‘learn from feedback’ for any updates to the platform.
For a smooth transition from the old service, the previous version will remain available until January, with existing data being gradually migrated to the new platform. Datasets categorised as population, demography and characteristics will be prioritised, including:
- Schools, pupils and the school workforce
- NHS performance (waiting times)
- Labour market and economy
- Council tax and devolved taxes
On the release, the Welsh Government said: “This is a significant step forward in how we provide access to official statistics for Wales. The new service offers a more modern, flexible, and user-friendly way to find, use, and share Welsh data.”
“Whether you’re a regular StatsWales user or just starting out, we hope you’ll find the new platform easier to navigate and more responsive to your needs.”
