Leukaemia UK Polimapper Case Study
“Being able to show MPs the number of people affected by leukaemia in their constituency each year is a great way to personalise our engagements and helps MPs to understand the impact leukaemia has”
The brief
Leukaemia UK were looking to produce localised data to help engagement with MPs. While data on cancer is widely available, constituency-specific information on leukaemia is scarce, making it difficult to create a targeted and personal message for parliamentarians.
A core campaign message focused on low 5-year survival rates, driving home the message that 50% of those diagnosed at the time of an election would not survive to the next one.
The Solution
Leukaemia UK wanted to focus on three particular areas: instances, mortality and survival. For these indicators, the data is primarily published at an ICB level. Therefore, in order to bring this down to a constituency level, the team at Polimapper set to work converting the data. Utilising ICB to constituency look ups, the team were able to convert both percentage and numerical data, producing localised stats based on population.
A key part of the research was finding comparable cancer statistics across the UK’s devolved health authorities. This allowed Polimapper to create a single, unified dataset that could be used to generate constituency values for all Great Britain.
“Stakeholders always find the data insightful and useful; it opens up a conversation”
The Result
By presenting digestible, localised data, Polimapper has helped Leukaemia UK increase its engagements with MPs, sparking conversations and driving the push for change.
Lewis Miller, policy and public affairs manager at Leukaemia UK, explains the benefit of using Polimapper at stakeholder events:
“The data has helped us show MPs that although leukaemia is a rare and less common cancer it has an impact in their constituencies.
At a drop-in event we held in Westminster, we had a station displaying Polimapper, this engaged MPs and opened up the discussion allowing us to talk about the impact of leukaemia.
We have also used taken it to meetings with MPs, shared it digitally with MPs as an engagement tool, and we are in the process of adding it to our website”
